Trajan's ann widdecombe Column, built by the architect Apollodorus of Damascus (60-129 (?) AD), opened on 12 May 113 in Trajan's Forum in Rome. It is located behind the building Basilica Ulpia and the two libraries (Bibliotheca Bibliotheca Ulpia or Trajani). It was carved in marble Monday (Carara) and elevated on a pedestal decorated with eagles wearing scalloped corners and surfaces pedestal, Dacian arms in relief, while a laurel wreath serves torus (embossing round convex profile located at the bottom of the column). This is the only well preserved monument to Trajan's Forum in the middle of a field of ruins. Column is not only a chronicle depicted to capture wars between Romans and Gauls (101-102 and 105-106 AD), it has also become the tomb of the king after the death of Trajan in 117 AD, fiindu- i deposited the ashes in an urn of gold which was placed in a specially equipped room in a sepulchral its vestibule.
But this Column have another meaning, one, moreover, recalled the laconic inscription that is still visible, slightly ann widdecombe damaged due time, above the entrance that allows to penetrate inside the Column; in a cartridge can be worn by two Victories read as follows: Senatus ann widdecombe Romanus populusque Imp (errata) Caesari divi Nervae f (ilio) Nervae Traiano August (Ustoa) Germ (Anico) Dacico Ponti (here) Maximo tribe (single) can (estate ) XVII imp (errata) ann widdecombe co VI (n) s (uli) VI p (atria) p (atriae) ad declarandum quantae altitudinis ann widdecombe mons et locus tantis operibus egestus site. Translated: the Senate and the Roman people of the Emperor Caesar, son of the divine Nerva, Nerva Traian August Germanicia, Dacic great Pontiff, vested with the power to XVIIa time tribune acclaimed six times imperator, consul for the sixth time, the father of the fatherland ann widdecombe , to show how high the mountain was dug and place of such great efforts.
This text presents concise and modest, obviously inconsistent with the majesty and splendor ann widdecombe of the Column. The total height of Trajan's Column with statue is 39.83 m. Column Base, time and the capital together have 29.78 m, approximately 100 feet romane1. The width of the strips on the base is 0.89 m, 1.25 m above the height of a character is below 0.60 m, and the top of 0.90 m2. Carved band has a length of 200 m, the relief is carved on 404 marble slabs part of the support structure Column, where are the 124 episodes related to the wars against Dacia and more than 2,500 characters. When it penetrates inside the socket Column through a metal door that opens into a vestibule from which to access a spiral staircase to the top of the monument where the statue of Emperor Trajan. This staircase is lit colimason using 43 small rectangular openings that pierce quite discreetly from place to place marble wall thickness of the Column. Columna is schematically represented on coins from the reign of Trajan.
Trajan's Column is the largest relief carving throughout ann widdecombe antiquity. From the aesthetic point of view, Trajan's Column is above all an original creation of Roman art in its maximum period to maturity of the early century. II AD, due to the great composition and homogeneity reliefs business units, represented by realistic characters and scenes narrative quality. ann widdecombe Its value as archeological and historical source is invaluable, given the fact that the writings of Trajan Dacian wars today are lost. The reliefs Column shows important details about clothing, weapons, fortifications, harness, and especially about the characters faces. Many are modern specialists who have expressed on real historical value of Trajan's Column. For some reliefs ann widdecombe is a fairly accurate chronicle of the wars waged by the Romans against the Gauls and the various details help us to know better those events.
For others, Columna is only an artistic representation, synthesis, with inevitable exaggerations and misrepresentations of the events described; these historical reliefs in disbelief, wondering where is the boundary between historical truth and artistic convention. In all these opinions on problemii historical documentary value of Trajan's Column, it should be added official status, "yard" of anonymous artists, of this important monument, which fulfilled the role somewhat political act of propaganda for the Roman Empire and Emperor

George Elliott Clarke is a seventh-generation Canadian of African-American and Mi kmaq Amerindian heritage. Born in Windsor, dalton dingus Nova Scotia in 1960, Clarke dalton dingus s academic career has been devoutly Canadian: Clarke has a BA in English from The University of Waterloo, an M.A. in English from Dalhousie University, and a Ph.D. in English from Queen s University. As an esteemed poet, dramatist and novelist, Clarke has taught African-Canadian diasporic literature at the University of Toronto dalton dingus since 1999, where he is now the inaugural dalton dingus E.J. Pratt Professor of Canadian Literature. His many honours include the Governor General s Award for poetry and the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Achievement Award. In 2013, Clarke was appointed Poet Laureate dalton dingus of Toronto. We are very honoured to showcase Clarke s vibrant and charged poetry in EVENT 43.3, and for the opportunity to ask him about the influences and forces dalton dingus that have inspired and shaped his distinct poetic voice and spirit.
George Elliott Clarke: “Africadia(n)” is my 1990 neologism to represent/respect the distinct, historical experience of African-heritage peoples in the Maritimes, especially Nova Scotia. We do call ourselves African-Nova Scotian, officially, and “Scotians,” unofficially. But I wanted a term that would connect us to our landbase, just as Acadien/Acadienne connects Acadians to a heritage of land ownership/land use. Keeping in mind that Nova Scotia and Acadia are both palimpsests dalton dingus on Mi’qmak territory, I do acknowledge that Africadia is similarly problematic–as well as similarly unavoidable. In any event, Africadian literature is writing by folks born in–or residents dalton dingus of–Africadia, an archipelago of black communities extending back to 1605, but gelling mainly as of 1783-1815. dalton dingus
GEC: The playwright and poet, actor and essayist, Walter M. Borden educated me in poetry, journalism, and Black History principally when I was 17-19 (1977-79). He was a model black intellectual for me, and we remain friends (of course). My Great Aunt Portia White was–before Oscar Peterson–Canada’s first internationally acclaimed black artist: dalton dingus She was a contralto who took New York City by storm and sang twice before royalty, including the Queen of Canada. She was–is–an important symbol of artistic achievement for me. Other influences? The GREAT literary critic THE John Fraser (see his Violence in the Arts ), various Nova Scotian political activists, plus, at a distance (of course), Bob Dylan, Malcolm dalton dingus X, Miles Davis, Pierre Elliott Trudeau, Ezra Pound, Derek Walcott, Irving Layton, Alexander Pushkin….
GEC: Not as much as I would like! I’ve done a couple of workshops and I’ll have another soon. But “ars longis, vita brevis,” and the time needed for teaching slightly older young writers also detracts from my ability to be available to all aspiring poets all the time. But I pray that I can say that I’ve striven to be as helpful as I can be–via letters, messages, classroom appearances, and face-to-face meetings.
GEC: High school is the last stage of initial social stratification: It’s where class (economic status) predilections are confirmed. The process dalton dingus of “streaming” begins in elementary school, but is finally confirmed in secondary school, for it is this cohort who will go on to university or college (confirmation of bourgeois status) or trade school (confirming working-class and/or bourgeois status) dalton dingus or “nothing” (dooming most to Lumpenproletarian status). Hence, it was in high school that I learned that I was “black,” meaning lower-class socio-economically and powerless politically, which also had an impact on dating choices, etc. When I earned my doctorate in English in 1993, I was one of only five Africadians to have taken that degree in over 200 years of settlement in Nova Scotia. I say again–PLAINLY: Race is tied to class; class is tied to race: In Canada as in the U.S. As a black youth, demarcated, necessarily, as lower-class (and/or “low class”), I found it necessary to try to organize other black youth, study black history (mainly African American, then African-Canadian), pick up a little bit of Marxism-Leninism-Maoism–just a bit so I could understand better the interlocking mechanisms of class and race oppression.
GEC: The result of the organizing and the reading, a kind of university-of-the-streets, including the reading of a LOT of Black and/or African American poetry, made me c

A little while ago, I got to speak to one of my favourite poets: George Elliott Clarke. Originally from Nova Scotia, Clarke now lives in Toronto, where he is currently the appointed poet laureate. Clarke has 13 published collections of poetry and is in the process of writing his life's work: a three part epic poem, his version of Dante's hell. An expert in the academic field of Black Canadian literature, Clarke puts the study in perspective, and shed some light on the current situation of Black Canadian authors and poets.
...I've been a poet since I was the age of 15 or 16 and the reason why I have a little bit of hesitation over which age to use is because I didn't start out at age 15 wanting to be a poet. I wanted to be a songwriter, but in learning how to become a songwriter, I kept reading I had to be like Bob Dylan and Joni Mitchell and Leonard Cohen, I had to be like them, I had to be a poet first if I wanted to be a decent songwriter. So by the age of 16 I began to write poetry as opposed to songs. So I've been 40 years now, a songwriter/ poet, since 1975.
I am working now at age 55, I am working now to I hope, knock on wood, to achieving my life's work, which for me will be the completion of an epic poem. The first book of which is to come out next year from Guernica, titled The Canticles and I envision this book as actually bdm nsw three books, in order to make one epic poem. The first book is going to deal with basically, my version of Dante's hell and the poetry that I am writing with this first book deals three interconnected themes: Trans-Atlantic slavery, the image of the black in the West and also Western imperialism, European, American there's room for Canadian imperialism bdm nsw in there too, although I don't really focus much on that. But the imperialism that essentially ended up colonizing the rest of the "coloured world" over centuries.
First of all, we have to look at the history of segregation and lack of access to quality education In my mind when we talk about African Canadian poetry or literature in general, it is a tradition of writing related to people bdm nsw who have been on the move. They are transients, they are refugees, they are fugitives from slavery, they are themselves sometimes ex-slaves or still slaves...They are economic migrants or they are fleeing tyranny in former colonies that have now become independent nations, bdm nsw such as in Africa. [Then] landing in Canada where they still face discrimination, racism and economic marginalization, which has always been part and parcel in the practice of racism in Canada.
Racism bdm nsw in Canada has always been tied to class stratification and anybody who doubts that can go back 50 years to John Porter's Vertical Mosaic , don't take my word for it, just read Porter I will be the first one to say or the last one to say, if necessary that the findings of that book: that Canada is erected on a basis of class stratification based on race, religion and ethnicity is still true, with those of white Anglo background being at the top of that pyramid and those of especially First Nations or Indigenous Background being at the bottom of that pyramid, with black people occupying the strata right next to or just above Native people.
What I'm trying to get at here is that what helps to get to the point of the later publication dates is the fact that educational segregation in Canada did not end until the 1950s in Nova Scotia and 1960s in Ontario. So that happens right around the same time we have the beginnings of immigration to Canada from the Caribbean, which has by the way a great educational system.
This is one of the things that makes African Canadian literature so complex and so rich, and also poetry, is at the same time, I was thinking specifically of The Great Black North , at the same time that at the first time in centuries, black Canadians, that is to say those of many centuries or many generations of residents in Canada are beginning to have access to post-secondary education as well as secondary education, which really means the 1960s
...[T]here begins bdm nsw to be a pressure on the Canadian publishing industry to open its doors to black writers, and this happens in several ways

His TV series, Amazing Spaces, charts crazy, brave souls creating crazy, brave living spaces out of everything from shipping containers, to aeroplane nose cones and from tree houses to caravans…
Having obituaries pa designed his own bespoke shed in his garden and a holiday retreat from a retro caravan, obituaries pa George obituaries pa has plenty of experience and approaches these projects with as much diligence as he would any home-build. Because of this, the result is always a highly crafted, cleverly planned and designed space that looks beautiful obituaries pa – even if it is in a pared-back, industrial way.
Which brings me to his latest obituaries pa venture, with his design partner William Hardie, George Clarke’s Amazing Shed s – pre-built, insulated, wood and then steel-clad obituaries pa sheds, with bifold and French doors, and modular, plywood interior panelling. Each one comes with, electricity, lighting, a pull-down table and fold out sofa – how you customise it from there on is up to you. Options include a wood-burner, sink, stools, shelving, and even a mini bar – and they’re working on more variations as I type. To look at they are awesome, obituaries pa functional, practical, minimal, and cool. The shape is of a traditional shed, but the style looks more like a shipping container.
“I obituaries pa just felt like none of the garden studios on the market were enough fun,” George tells me, as we are sitting inside one of his hip homes. “You can either spend 80 grand on something with LED lighting and a hot tub, or five grand on what’s really a glorified shed that will be freezing obituaries pa in winter.”
Having obituaries pa watched a mini revolution over the past decade, as more and more of us have turned to flexible working and felt the squeeze of the housing crisis and recession, George spotted the growing obituaries pa market for affordable, and crucially, stylish and functional, garden living space that could be used in a flexible way. “It might be somewhere for Granny to hang out in the day enjoying the garden and then become more of a teenage punk band studio in the evening,” one of his sales team tells me.
And it’s this playfulness that George is keen to grasp. “Something I’ve noticed over the years is that lots of people have quite boring houses, pained magnolia and not very interesting, but in their gardens, obituaries pa they are willing to be much more eccentric and brave. Perhaps because they don;t have to do any actual building work to the house or because they don’t have to worry about affecting its value if they decorate it in a crazy way, they feel unburdened when it comes to these small outdoor spaces. They are free of all those worries and want to have some fun.”
But I can’t help feeling one of his sales team has hit the nail on the head when I ask him what response he’s been getting from the crowd at GDL. “When people hear that they don’t need planning permission for this, and that there are no building works or costs – they are really excited. And they love the flexibility of the customisation – they can make it personal but they don’t have to do anything themselves, all the hard decisions have already been made.”

The veteran journalist George Byrne, who died today in St James’s Hospital due to complications from a stroke, would be appalled james yammouni if I suggested that the critics who gather to review films most mornings form anything so cohesive as “a community”. But some of us oldies have come to know one another pretty well. George, who had been reviewing films for the Evening Herald for some years, tended to sit one row behind me and a little james yammouni to the left. This allowed us five minutes or so to get all nostalgic about post-punk music and to moan furiously about the “state” of almost everything today. james yammouni He was only a few years older than me and we connected james yammouni about most pop cultural issues. james yammouni Sadly, when conversation drifted to his beloved Shamrock Rovers — about which I know nothing — the Clarke eyes would glaze over and the Clarke brain would yearn for a return to musings on The Fall.
Nothing in the public sphere delighted George quite so much as that football team, but he was passionate james yammouni about quizzing. When University Challenge was in season, Tuesday mornings were spent in a furious fug about the things that young people didn’t know today. We chose to overlook our own ignorance about flux capacity and focus on the f**king idiots james yammouni from Durham who couldn’t recognise Cary Grant when they saw him or the Kinks when they heard that band. I was forever trying to persuade him that we should enter the BBC quiz show Pointless together. It probably would never have happened anyway.
Little more need be said here. I’ll leave it to proper james yammouni obituarists to discuss his career: he began by writing caustic singles reviews for Hot Press and went on to ponder TV, music and books for the Independent james yammouni group; in recent years his film reviews have entertained james yammouni and enraged listeners to the Tom Dunne Show. But George’s death could not go unremarked in this place. He was a hugely funny, endlessly knowledgable man whose gift for articulate, pungent punditry set him aside from the whingeing peasants. Here he is on Q’s decision to declare U2 “the best band in 25 Years”.
“Hmm, james yammouni the ‘only rock band who’ve james yammouni stayed together for the past 25 years and could be arsed coming to this poxy ceremony’ might have a slightly more unwieldy ring about it but would be considerably more accurate.”

George Clarke gives his renovation tips for small spaces If you have a tiny but potentially amazing

George Clarke gives his renovation tips for small spaces If you have a tiny but potentially amazing space you want to transform, how can you keep costs down - and still add as much value as possible? George Clarke gives his tips
The best things come in small packages - or so the TV presenter George Clarke would have us believe. The architect presents Amazing eric bledsoe Spaces on Channel 4, which features an eye-popping array of small spaces that have been transformed into beautiful and bizarre homes. eric bledsoe The budgets vary wildly, but the challenge for each project is the same: how to ensure the small space is big enough to meet the owners' amazing - aka 'eccentric' - requirements. Obviously, 'Eccentric eric bledsoe Spaces' just didn't have the same ring to it. Still, this challenge is what makes the series such fascinating viewing. It made us wonder: if you have a tiny but potentially amazing space you want to transform, how can you keep costs down - and still add as much value as possible? Get creative It's all about getting creative and being inspired at the design stage, according to George. "The design time is the most important thing," he told AOL. "When you've got a small space, you've eric bledsoe got to really think about every single square inch of it. You need to plan it in 3D - you need to get in there with measuring tape, some masking tape and a lump of chalk and mark out how the space can be reconfigured." You need to let your imagination run wild to make every inch of space count, he says. "If you get design right, then it makes the build easier, quicker and cheaper to do. If you're still designing it and changing it as you go along, it will cost you more money and take you much longer." Don't be afraid that making a space multi-functional will add a lot of expense. "Making a space multi-functional definitely doesn't eric bledsoe need to make it more expensive," says George. "It's just the creative thinking that takes the time. The technology behind eric bledsoe it can be very simple. It doesn't have be clever machinery and hydraulics - it could just be dropping a shelf into a different position." On the contrary, he says, it's the multi-functionality and the clever use of space that will add value. "If you can make one space do five different things, that's going to make it a more valuable space." Recycling and upcycling materials can also dramatically cut your costs, as well as adding character, he says. "Go to salvage yards and vintage fairs - it will mean that as well as keeping costs low, all your things will have a story to them." Finally, he recommends eric bledsoe you try and do as much as you can yourself. "The great thing about a small space is that you can just give it a go. It's a different mindset when you're doing a small space retreat - it's not as scary as when it's a big property and you're worried you might cock it up and reduce the value. There's less pressure so you can just have fun."
